Heavy snowfall blocks Nathu La

Five-army frontier posts including Nathu La are cut-off due to heavy snowfall since last night. The snowfall that continued today as well blocked the Jawaharlal Nehru Marg connecting the post.
Apart from Nathu La, the posts at Kupup, Baba Mandir, Sherathang and Jalep La pass in Kalimpong sub-divisionwith other two villages also remain cut off as the area is surrounded by 3-4 ft snow.
No vehicle was allowed to cross the thirteen Mile area due to the heavy snowfall and more than 300 tourist vehicles had to return from the area. “There has been heavy snowfall in the past 12 hours and it still continues to fall. So it is not possible to the clear the snow now,” said an army official.
“We will start clearing the road from tomorrow morning to resume traffic movement by Saturday,” the army officials, said.
This is the third heavy snowfall reported in the state this season. Apart from Nathu La, snow also showered heavily in North Sikkim and in certain high altitude areas in West Sikkim.
