Tourism boost for Darjeeling

Ever since the agitation for Gorkhaland began under the Gorkha Jana Mukti Morcha's leadership, there has been a widespread apprehension of its repercussions on the tourism industry.
But tourists kept on swarming in to Darjeeling. `There is normal inflow of both local and foreign tourists`, confirmed Mr. Pradeep Lama, general-secretary of the Darjeeling Association of Travel Agents (DATA). However, this season, the recent spate of disturbances spelt trouble for the tourism industry `As such there have been no cancellations in the reservations but tourists have postponed their visit to a later period`, stated Mr. Amar Singh, director of tourism department under the DGHC.
According to Mr. Lama, the trouble in Tibet has made many of the foreign tourists to opt for Darjeeling. `By the look of things so far, we expect there to be an upsurge in tourists in the coming months`, he said indicating that this is going to be one of the best seasons that Darjeeling ever had.
