Mountain biking expedition soon

The tourism department in Sikkim would be organising an international mountain biking expedition next month.
The expedition to be called The 1st Khanchendzonga Mountain Biking Expedition 08, is schedule to start on 3 March.
The cost to organise the event is expected to be around 70 lakh and would be open only to professional mountain bikers.
The organisers have also secured an affiliation with the International Mountain Biking Association for the event.
“The first prize would be of US $ 25,000 to be followed by several other prizes both in the men and women categories.
According to Mr BR Subba, joint secretary, Sikkim Tourism, the objective is to foster adventure tourism in the state.
“About 100 professional bikers are expected to participate in this expedition. The expedition would be held for 10 days covering entire Sikkim where every participants has to cover 65 km per day,” he added.
The expedition would, however, stay away from areas that mark the China border including Kerang, Gurudongmar, Munguthang in North Sikkim and Nathula, Kupup and Jalepla in East Sikkim.
“So far we have received good response and enquiries from the domestic mountain bikers but we are expecting equally good response from international biers as well,” the organisers, said.
