Tusker destroys tea estate property

At least 12 settlements were vandalised in an elephant raid at the Simulbarie tea estate on the outskirts of Siliguri past midnight.
According to Mr NC Roy, ranger of the Bamanpukhri forest range under Kurseong division, a solitary tusker forayed into the labour line of the tea estate close to the Mahanada Wildlife Sanctuary at about 2 am night and attacked the workers quarters. “The workers living in the quarters managed to flee just before the pachyderm raid, but the tusker was successful in damaging at least 12 settlements with some of them even been brought down to dust,” Mr Roy said. A team of foresters from the Bamanpukhri range visited the damaged labour line. The owners of the hutments would be provided Rs 500 each as compensation, the ranger added.
