Heritage tour in Darjeeling and Kalimpong

Package Code : heritage

Duration : 6 days
Cost : Available on request

Much of the region was originally developed as an escaped for the British during the British raj in India. The Heritages from those era are still in abundance in the region especially in the Darjeeling and Kalimpong area. In this tour we try to pick up some of the nuggets of the old era.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Reception At Siliguri (NJP/Bagdogra), Proceed to Darjeeling (80Kms). Transfer to Hotel Windamere. Windamere, "One of the three Jewels of the Raj", as described by a celebrated travel writer, was established in the 19th century as a cosy boarding house for bachelor English and Scottish tea planters, and converted into a hotel just before the outbreak of the Second World War. Well known to sophisticated travellers the world over, the Windamere is famous for its unique ambience and charm, and has been the subject of many leading stories in the international media. (Overnight At Darjeeling).

Day 2: Early Morning visit to Tiger Hill for an unforgettable sight of Sunrise over Mt. Kunchanjungha. Situated at a distance of 10Kms from the town Tiger Hill rises to a height of 8515ft above sea level. The ascent to Tiger Hill winds along the moist hilly track of Senchal Wild life Sanctuary that passes through the dense forests of magnificent oak, magnolia and rhododendron, with thickets of raspberries on both side and sparkling cascades tumbling down the hill.

The summit commands a grand view of the bulk of Kunchanjungha stretching across the horizon. The first ray of the Sun touches the snow peak and the grandeur of the sight can be remembered for the years to come.
Back to the hotel for a cup of Darjeeling tea. Take a short evening stroll around the Observatory Hill road passing through high pine forests and visit the old heritage buildings of Raj era. (Overnight at Darjeeling).

Day 3: Day starts with a fabulous Joyride in Heritage Toy Train. Visit famous Batasia Loop and back to the hotel. Visit to the unique Darjeeling Zoo for a rare sight of high altitude Himalayan species including red panda and snow leopard. After lunch visit to the rope way point for an incredible ropeway ride down to Takvar Valley. (Overnight at Darjeeling).

Day 4: Proceed to Kalimpong (60Kms) via Peshok Road that passes through some of the most beautifully located tea gardens of Darjeeling overlooking the Rangit River Valley. Transfer to Himalayan Hotel a stone built, two-storey heritage hotel. Surrounded by spacious gardens featuring a wide variety of Himalayan flora, the hotel has excellent views of Kanchenjunga and the surrounding mountain ranges, which drop to the nearby Teesta and Rangit rivers.

The hotel itself features Himalayan oak ceilings, teak pillars, walnut and teak furniture with open fireplaces in most rooms. It is a hotel of real charm and character, with an atmosphere redolent of its close association with Himalayan history. Spend the day at leisure to enjoy the magnificence of Kunchanjungha from the hotel lawn. (Overnight at Himalayan Hotel).

Day 5: Full day excursion to explore the heritage of Kalimpong. Visit to the handsome Gothic Church and Tower built as the memory to the Revd. W. Macfarlane, the pioneer Missionary of the Church of Scotland, who died here in 1887. After lunch visit to the century old Graham's Home and three hundred years old Bong monastery. Free evening to have a leisure walk on the lonely Eastman road flanked by pine trees. (Overnight at Kalimpong).

Day 6: Morning visit to the downtown market for shopping traditional handicraft items. Check out from hotel and proceed to Siliguri. Farewell at Siliguri.
