Chilapata Forest – The Eastern Gateway to Jaldapara’s Wild Heart

Tucked away in the eastern part of the Dooars, near Alipurduar, Chilapata Forest is a place where nature thrives in its purest form. With dense Sal and Teak woods, a rich wildlife population, and deep cultural roots, this forest is perfect for both the adventure seeker and the quiet observer.

Separated from the western Jaldapara National Park by the shimmering Torsha River, Chilapata shares the same lush grasslands, wildlife variety, and scenic beauty — but with fewer crowds, making it an ideal choice for travellers seeking an offbeat forest experience.

Nature & Wildlife

The forest is a treasure trove of biodiversity. Towering Sal, Teak, and Khayer trees dominate the landscape, while the undergrowth hums with the activity of birds and small mammals.

Birdwatchers will find Chilapata especially rewarding, with sightings of Great Hornbills, Oriental Pied Hornbills, and the elusive Rufous-necked Hornbill. Raptors like the Fishing Eagle, Shikra, and Crested Serpent Eagle patrol the skies, while ground-dwelling species such as partridges, fowls, and the endangered Bengal Florican make occasional appearances.

Large mammals here include Asian elephants, Indian bison (gaur), sambar deer, hog deer, rhinos, and predators like tigers and leopards — though the big cats remain shy and elusive.

Things to Do in Chilapata

Elephant Safari

One of Chilapata’s signature experiences, the elephant safari takes you deep into the jungle’s hidden corners, where jeeps cannot go. Riding high on a gentle giant, you get a unique perspective and a chance to see wildlife up close.

Jeep Safari & Wildlife Viewing

Jeep safaris offer a faster way to explore Chilapata’s varied landscapes, with guided routes to the best viewing points. Elephants, deer, and birdlife are commonly spotted, especially in the early mornings and late afternoons.

Bird Watching

Whether you’re an experienced birder or just someone who enjoys spotting colourful feathers, Chilapata is a paradise. Winter months are particularly special, with migratory species adding to the diversity.

Cultural Encounters

Chilapata’s forest villages are home to indigenous communities like the Bodo and Rava tribes. Visitors can learn about their customs, festivals, and daily life — a living heritage that has thrived alongside the forest for centuries.

Nal Rajar Garh (Fort of the Nal Kings)

Hidden deep in the forest, this ruined fort from the Gupta period is one of Chilapata’s most mysterious attractions. Only a few moss-covered walls remain, but the sense of history is powerful.

Nearby Attractions

Chilapata’s location makes it a perfect base for exploring the Dooars region:

  • Jaldapara National Park – 35 km west, famous for one-horned rhinos.

  • Buxa Tiger Reserve (Rajabhatkhawa) – 33 km north, with trekking routes and forest watchtowers.

  • Phuentsholing, Bhutan – 50 km away, offering a quick taste of Bhutanese culture.

  • Cooch Behar – 30 km away, known for its grand palace and the temple of Madan Mohan.

Best Time to Visit

  • High Season (October–March) – Cool, dry weather (10–20°C), perfect for safaris and outdoor activities.

  • Summer (April–June) – Warmer and more humid, with daytime temperatures around 30°C. Wildlife viewing is still good, especially near water sources.

  • Monsoon (July–September) – Heavy rains, lush greenery, and a completely different mood in the forest, but safaris remain closed between 15 June and 15 September.
