Nameri National Park – The Wild Heart of Assam’s Foothills

Tucked away in the gentle foothills of the Eastern Himalayas, Nameri National Park is one of Assam’s most beautiful and biodiverse wilderness areas. Spread across 213 square kilometres, this pristine forest landscape offers the perfect blend of adventure, serenity, and wildlife exploration. Whether you’re a nature photographer, birdwatcher, or thrill-seeker, Nameri promises a wilderness experience that lingers long after you’ve left its emerald trails.

Located about 35 km from Tezpur, Nameri lies on the Assam–Arunachal Pradesh border. The park’s northern boundary merges seamlessly with Pakhui Wildlife Sanctuary in Arunachal Pradesh, together forming one of Northeast India’s richest transboundary ecosystems.

A Brief History of Nameri

Originally declared a Wildlife Sanctuary in 1985, Nameri covered an area of 137 sq. km. In 1998, it was upgraded to a National Park with an expanded area of 213 sq. km. It is also the second Tiger Reserve in Assam, after Manas, and plays a vital role in conserving India’s tiger population and Himalayan foothill biodiversity.

Wildlife of Nameri National Park

Nameri is known for its dense forests, riverine grasslands, and semi-evergreen vegetation that sustain a striking diversity of wildlife. The Asian Elephant and the Royal Bengal Tiger are its most iconic inhabitants, often spotted moving gracefully through the Sal and bamboo forests.

Other species found here include the Leopard, Clouded Leopard, Gaur (Indian Bison), Sloth Bear, Himalayan Black Bear, Wild Boar, Sambar, Hog Deer, Muntjac, Capped Langur, Assamese Macaque, Indian Giant Squirrel, and Dhole (wild dog).

The park also shelters numerous reptiles, amphibians, and small mammals, making it a thriving habitat for a wide range of fauna native to the Himalayan foothills.

Birdwatcher’s Paradise

For bird lovers, Nameri is a treasure trove. With over 300 bird species, it’s one of the finest birding destinations in Assam. The White-winged Wood Duck, a rare and endangered species, is the park’s star attraction. Other avian residents include Drongos, Bee-eaters, Hornbills (four species), Grey-headed Fishing Eagles, Plovers, Bulbuls, Ibis, Barbets, Babblers, and Mainas.

During the winter months, the park becomes a vibrant haven for migratory birds that arrive from far-off regions — making it a birdwatcher’s dream destination.

Adventure and Activities in Nameri

Beyond wildlife spotting, Nameri National Park offers plenty of outdoor adventure. The Jia Bhoroli River, which flows through the park, is perfect for rafting, angling, swimming, and even sunbathing on its sandy river islands. Rafting here isn’t just about the thrill — it’s about gliding through one of India’s most scenic river valleys surrounded by untouched forest.

Guided forest walks are also popular. Visitors can explore the forest on foot in designated zones accompanied by trained forest guides and armed escorts — a unique opportunity to experience the forest up close, with its rustling leaves, bird calls, and untamed beauty.

Best Time to Visit

The park remains open from November to April, which is the best time to visit Nameri. During these months, the skies are clear, wildlife activity is high, and outdoor adventures are at their best. The park remains closed during the monsoon season due to heavy rainfall and river swells.
